Grandmas

Grandmas are special people! They are usually the ones that let you get by with a little more than your parents would allow, they give you a little more sugar or caffeine for a treat, they give awesome hugs and lots of kisses, and they treat you like you’re the most special child in the world! In the last couple of weeks, I’ve been able to look back at memories and blessings of my grandmas. I was blessed to know both of my grandmas and 3 of my great-grandmas. I now only have 1 grandma and 1 great-grandma living and they happen to be mother and daughter.

Last week Friday night I had the privilege of singing in memory of my Grandma Altena at the Relay for Life survivor dinner. She was very involved with that before she lost her battle with cancer 15 years ago. It was such an honor for me to sing for her because she loved music a lot! I think a lot of my talent and desire for music stems back to her and her family. I always remember praying and singing songs before bedtime when we would stay there. And I just remember singing around her house growing up and hearing her play piano or singing a tune herself. She was a great lady and lived her life with so much integrity – even as she battled cancer. I admire her legacy so much! I sang two songs and here is part of one of them. It’s called “Blessings.” And seemed very fitting – even the trials we have in life, and the people we lose that we love so much along the way, God is faithful through all of that.

A few nights ago we had the opportunity to celebrate my Great-Grandma Den Herder’s 90th birthday! She has been a great example to me also, and I’ve enjoyed watching and observing the different generations over the years. This would be my mom’s grandma – so I’d be the 4th living generation on that side which seems amazing. Grandmas are just so special and I'm most thankful for their love for Jesus and what they have taught me! They do and always will hold a very special place in my heart!
